HP Launches New Universal Printhead & Latex Maintenance Cartridges

Simpler parts. Smoother maintenance. Better prints. Here’s what the HP Latex 836 update changes.

HP has rolled out three key updates for its Latex printer range: a new Universal 836 Printhead and two redesigned maintenance cartridges. These updates simplify part management, improve reliability, and reduce day-to-day hassle—but to benefit, there’s one important step:

  1. "You need to update your printer’s firmware."

At Papergraphics, we see these changes as a welcome move toward reducing complexity and keeping your printroom running at full speed. Here’s what’s changing—and how we’ll help you transition smoothly.

HP Latex 836 Universal Printhead: One Replaces Four

The new HP Latex 836 Universal Printhead (SKU: 4UU95A) replaces four colour-specific heads across the HP Latex 630, 700, 730, 800 and 830 series. Instead of managing multiple SKUs, you’ll now use just one:

  • 4UV95A – Black/Cyan
  • 4UV96A – Magenta/Yellow
  • 4UV97A – Light Cyan/Light Magenta
  • 4UV98A – Overcoat

White and Optimiser printheads are not affected and remain available separately.

What This Printhead Brings to Your Workflow

  • Simplified Stock Management: One SKU replaces four—cutting ordering errors and streamlining inventory, especially across multi-site setups.
  • User-Friendly Replacement: You can swap the 836 yourself—no tools or technician needed. Automated maintenance cycles reduce manual cleaning and free up your team’s time.
  • High-Quality Output, Fast. With non-circular nozzle technology and 10-picolitre ink drops, the 836 delivers bold colour and fine detail across coated and uncoated media. Expect speeds up to 388 ft²/hr for outdoor banners and 269 ft²/hr for indoor displays—perfect for crisp gradients and clean text, even on complex jobs.
  • Less Downtime, More Consistency. Built-in micro-recirculation keeps ink flowing, reducing clogging and purging. It’s a great fit for long or back-to-back runs.
  • Faster Drying at Lower Temps. Improved ink placement reduces ink load, allowing faster drying at lower curing temperatures—ideal for heat-sensitive media.
  • Sustainability Built In: The new Eco-Carton design cuts plastic use by 80% and CO₂ emissions by 66%. It’s fully recyclable, and HP’s free Planet Partners scheme makes returns easy.

The 836 Universal Printhead is compatible with: HP Latex 630, 700, 730, 800, and 830 series (Models with white ink support will still require separate White and Optimiser printheads)

New Maintenance Cartridges: 833 and 838

HP has also released updated maintenance cartridges, designed to support the latest firmware versions. These manage waste ink and help maintain print consistency.

For HP Latex 630 / 630W printers:

  • Old cartridge: 4UV99A
  • New cartridge: 833 Maintenance Cartridge (SKU: 9T062A)
  • Firmware required: sunspot_release_6.27.1.10-202503220141 (Released 27 March 2025)

For HP Latex 700 / 700W / 800 / 800W printers:

  • Old cartridge: 4UU96A
  • New cartridge: 838 Maintenance Cartridge (SKU: 9T063A)
  • Firmware required: PLS_60_25_21.1 (Released 10 June 2025)

The function of the cartridges hasn’t changed—but your printer won’t recognise the new ones without the correct firmware installed.

What We Recommend

  1. Update Your Firmware First: Compatibility depends on it. You’ll usually get a firmware notification on your printer’s touchscreen, but it’s worth double-checking. Not sure? Your Papergraphics account manager can walk you through it.
  2. Pre-Order Where Possible: Even with simpler SKU management, you’ll still need multiple printheads for high-volume use and the correct cartridge for your firmware version. Best to get ahead of demand.
  3. Test and Monitor: Run a few jobs, check your output, and share your feedback. We’re actively monitoring performance, and your insights help support the wider Papergraphics community.

In Summary

HP’s new 836 Universal Printhead and updated maintenance cartridges are designed to reduce complexity, improve efficiency, and support more sustainable printing. But firmware is the key—installing the correct version ensures your printer will accept the new parts.
